Belleville council unanimously supported a resolution from Brighton council asking that the provincial government relax residency rules now governing foreign trained and practising doctors.
Easing the timelines would allow for foreign doctors to be licensed in Ontario more quickly.
The resolution also calls on the province to institute a tuition program to attract family doctors to underserved areas.
The program would be similar to one now offered to nurses who are reimbursed their tuition costs if they work in less populated regions.
