City of Belleville officials are saddened to learn that former Lord Mayor of sister city Lahr, Germany, Werner Dietz, has passed away.
At Belleville council’s meeting Monday Mayor Mitch Panciuk said Lord Mayor Dietz visited Belleville more than any other council member from Lahr and became a great friend of former Belleville Mayor, the late George Zegouras.
Councillor Chris Malette met the Lord Mayor several times and said “he was a larger than life” figure and will be missed.
Although first elected in Lahr in 1976 Dietz served as Lord Mayor from 1981 until 1997.
Belleville’s city hall flag has been lowered to half-mast.
