Quinte West fire, Hastings-Quinte paramedics and OPP responded to a very serious collision between a VIA train and a car in Trenton on Friday.
Emergency services arrived at the rail crossing on Lester Road at Hamilton Road at 10:40 pm.
The jaws of life were used to extract a man from the wrecked car, who was taken to Trenton Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
The crossing could remain closed as VIA awaits a relief crew to take over the train.
