Bay of Quinte MP Ryan Williams spoke at an event run by the Quinte West Chamber of Commerce on Friday.
In an event titled “Update from the Hill,” Williams spoke about a number of issues impacting the business community.
This includs inflation, the workforce, and even discussion about the housing crisis.
Williams says he is planning to bring a motion to parliament that would allow homeowners to take a zero per cent interest loan to build a secondary suite in their yard or basement, provided that they rent that apartment out at 80% market rent.
He says this will tackle multiple issues.
“What that does is it allows us to have these residents in our area with existing buildings create existing apartments or new apartments,” Williams said. “We allow people who are feeling the pinch from their home to find some extra income and we provide jobs.”
Williams admitted that the biggest problem with the plan would be to find skilled trades to do the work.
“As long as we have people who are willing, we can create more jobs for that work place,” Williams told the Chamber.
Williams says he expects the motion to get through in his own party in the next month.
