It was expected to be a two-person race between Mitch Panciuk and Neil Ellis to become mayor of Belleville.
But a surprise third candidate filed his papers to run in the election this year.
Kyle Thomson filed his papers on the last day of eligibility.
On CJBQ’s The Lorne Brooker Show, Thomson, who defied provincially mandate lockdowns in January of last year, explained his decision to run.
Audio Player“I see people sitting in their municipality saying, You know what, it’s the government’s decision, I can’t do anything. And I figured there’s got to be a lot more integrity. There’s got to be a situation where people in our councils and our municipalities are standing up and saying, Listen, you know what, if this is going to harm our community, or if this is impeding on the growth, and the development of our communities, we’re going to make a difference.”
The municipal election is October 24.
