Belleville council is taking another step toward increasing the number of nurses in the community.
At its regular meeting Monday, council voted to approve $50,000 a year toward scholarships with Registered Nursing students studying at Loyalist College.
Council will offer a $2,500 a year to 20 nursing students in Loyalist’s new four-year Bachelor of Science Nursing program and fund their education costs to a maximum of $10,000.
To receive the full amount, students will have to receive their nursing licence and have passed a probationary period working with an employer in the city. Such probationary periods are typically six months long.
The scholarships will first be offered to students in their third year as they will enter the workforce quickly.
