Plans are underway for the second annual South Shore Cleanup in Prince Edward County.
This year’s event is aimed at cleaning up Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife area.
Organizers are hoping to see results similar to last year when 70 volunteers collected 930 pounds of garbage.
They found tires, sheets of plywood, a huge green tarp among the lots of garbage.
President of South Shore Initiative John Hirsch tells Quinte News the annual cleanup makes the south shore safe for all humans and creatures that use it.
He adds, “All over the world, people unfortunately discard things in the wrong places and it seems that the public has to get together every so often, at least once a year, to clean up.”
“We charge a bag tag to pick up people’s garbage at the end of the road people have a tendency to head off into the countryside and just dump stuff free of charge. And we end up picking up a lot of that.”
“Our annual Clean Up helps to make our South Shore safer and more pleasant for all the creatures and humans that use and enjoy the wilderness,” said John Hirsch, president, South Shore Joint Initiative. “We are grateful to the Elizabeth Crombie Real Estate Team for sponsoring this event and to The Vic Café for donating $10 vouchers for all participants.”
Volunteers can pick up garbage bags at either the corner of Army Reserve Road and County Road 24 or where Helmer and Babylon Roads intersect. All collections will be delivered to a big bin at the corner of Helmer and Babylon.
The cleanup goes rain or shine Saturday, September 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
