Bay of Quinte riding MP Ryan Williams is wondering about the RCMP and what he considers the organization’s lack of respect for Canadians’ privacy.
Williams is on the Standing Committee of Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics which is now conducting hearings investigating the RCMP’s use of spyware.
Police use of such invasive technology, which has been called a “wiretap on steroids,” was not brought to the federal Privacy Commissioner’s attention until it was noted in the media in June.
Williams says he’ll be asking questions and pushing for changes that mandate new technology be reported to the Privacy Commissioner and committee before being used to monitor Canadians’ online activities.
