Belleville council has enthusiastically and unanimously supported granting almost $50,000 toward the creation of a Firefighter Memorial Monument and Garden.
Almost 20 members of the Belleville Fire Department were in council chambers on Monday and applauded when the funding was approved.
The Memorial will be in honour of the 13 members of the Belleville Fire Department who’ve died either as a direct result of fighting fires or from illnesses caused by exposure to smoke and other harmful elements.
A girder from the World Trade Centre will be part of the Memorial which will feature a garden with 13 tall evergreens and Tea Rose bushes, one for each of the fallen firefighters.
It’s hoped it can be officially opened September 11 of this year.
