Last month was a busy one on Belleville Transit buses.
The month of May is usually one where transit ridership starts dipping for the summer however last month there were well over 88,000 trips, up from 73,000 in April.
And the May total was higher than in May of 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Belleville Transit Manager Paul Buck says the strong May numbers have a lot to do with almost 1,000 Loyalist students taking summer courses but adds that using public transit just makes sense.
“People just want to get out more. With the price of gas over $2 a litre, bus fare didn’t go up. You can still jump on a bus and go anywhere in Belleville for $3 for an adult (less for seniors and students). We’re just there. We’re always there and convenient and accessible.”
The much talked about bus route 9 north of Highway 401 in Thurlow ward had a ridership of almost 2,700 last month, up from 2,000 in April.
