Work should begin soon on Belleville’s lower bridge, otherwise known as the Bridge Street bridge.
Monday city council approved a low tender of just over $1 million to continue repairs on the bridge when another company declared bankruptcy before finishing the job last November.
An insurance company will pay for the work to be done, not taxpayers.
Many councillors said the public was frustrated by seemingly endless construction on the historic bridge with some thinking it should be torn down and replaced.
Council does not agree, as Mayor Mitch Panciuk explained.
“Those bridges are part of Belleville’s history, these arched bridges and the new footbridge is designed to complement it.”
During the repair work the bridge will remain open to traffic and at least one sidewalk will be open at all times.
The lower bridge was built in 1930.
