While work will be getting underway to make final repairs to Belleville’s lower, or Bridge Street bridge, the public will soon be invited to voice their opinion on what should be done with the old upper bridge over the Moira River.
The old arched bridge at the north end of Front Street is in rough shape and Mayor Mitch Panciuk says its condition will have to be evaluated and it might still be able to be used for vehicles, but a lot of people have other ideas for the historic structure.
“Maybe we’ll change the use and have it be more of a pedestrian bridge. There’s also a lot of discussion, many people have approached me already to look at painting it, allowing them to paint it as a community.”
A staff report on the upper bridge will come to council’s next meeting and then a public input process will be launched to decide the structure’s future.
