2 a.m. SUNDAY JUNE 12 UPDATE: QUINTE RELAY FOR LIFE RAISES $45,403.50
Bay of Quinte residents are back and fighting to support cancer research and services.
On Saturday, the popular Bay of Quinte Relay for Life returned to an in-person event after a two year stop due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The relay, is being held at Loyalist College from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., with a fundraising goal of $30,000 dollars.
Karen White, Bay of Quinte Relay for Life Corporate Sponsorship Lead and longtime supporter, says this years relay is different from others in the past.
“Its an amalgamated event, we used to have four events, Belleville, Quinte West, Brighton, and Prince Edward County. We’ve amalgamated into one event called the Bay of Quinte Relay for Life. So that’s the beauty of it, all four communities have come together.”
On top of having the four communities in the Bay of Quinte come together for the Relay, the event was also able to create corporate sponsorships with businesses in each of the four municipalities.
White says the fundraising goal has been coming along very well.
“The good news is we’ve already surpassed $30,000. I can’t give you the number, but we’ve already surpassed our goal, so that’s the good news. We have 21 teams and probably about 110 participants, fully supportive, already over the goal.”
The relay began with a Lap of Hope, which saw individuals currently battling cancer, taking the first lap around the Loyalist College track to kick off events. The Relay will also see the return of the touching Luminary Ceremony which lights up the track to remember those fighting and lost to cancer.
Total amounts raised for the 2022 Bay of Quinte Relay for Life will be announced later on Saturday, June 11th.
