Spring crops are “looking good” but Quinte area farmers are faced with a couple of problems.
The spring rains have been timely for corn and soy beans, and the wheat is just showing above ground.
Lloyd Crowe, the representative for District 13, Grain Growers of Ontario tells Quinte News, “Winter wheat is just a few weeks away from harvest.”
But, Crowe says, there are a couple of big problems.
“Fertilizer is three times, triple the price and diesel fuel is well more than double. It’s $10 a gallon. It’s just heartbreaking.”
Crowe says some farmers are starting to cut their hay and indicates it’s a good year for farmers.
“Planting since the first of May, oh yeah. The corn is probably mostly in and soybeans are getting wrapped up, probably this week.”
