The regular student immunization program at Hastings Prince Edward schools is getting back in high gear.
Program manager with the Health Unit Bill Sherlock tells Quinte News that following the shutdowns during the past two years, routine immunizations are now getting underway.
“We’re back into the schools. We’re also working with the schools. We’re giving grade seven shots at this point in time. We’re also working with the school boards.”
“We’re going to be issuing notices for those students that are overdue for the routine immunizations. That’s coming up in probably in late May or early June.”
Sherlock says parents will get notices in the mail or through the schools indicating which students are overdue for immunization.
“We’re working at getting the grade seven shots in. It’s a lot of catch-up. We were able to do some of the immunizations for grade sevens so we hit all the high schools with the grade sevens, eights and nines but we still have to get into those other schools that we missed.”
Manager of the school program Sheryl Ferrar says, “Our school boards are working very hard on the recovery plans and we’re going to be able to support them. While we’re not doing so much COVID work now we are going to be continuing with the clinics … nurses in the secondary schools with clinics. As well as supporting the elementary schools and secondary schools with more promotion work. That’s training and education around mental health, substance use, health relationship. That kind of work. “
