The province’s Special Investigations Unit will not be proceeding with charges against an OPP officer who shot an Anti-riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN) at a suspect in Stone Mills Township earlier this year.
On January 3, police attempted to apprehend a man in distress under the Mental Health Act at a residence near Highway 41 and County Road 14.
The man exited his home and refused repeated police commands to drop the firearm he was holding.
One officer struck the man three times with ARWEN rounds.
The man fell and dropped the gun and was bitten in the leg by a police dog.
He was not seriously injured.
SIU Director Joseph Martino is satisfied the subject officer acted reasonably and found no reasonable grounds to proceed with criminal charges.
