A proposed four-storey 38-unit apartment building for the corner of Dundas Street East and Burnham Street in east end Belleville is facing opposition from residents in the neighbourhood.
Foster Avenue resident Lesley Lewis told the Planning Advisory Committee Monday that the building was too big for the neighbourhood and “was a greedy attempt to put a lot of people into a small space.”
The developer is asking for smaller two-bedroom apartments than are allowed under zoning regulations
Other residents had traffic and parking concerns.
Meanwhile, Spencer Hutchison, planner for RFA Consulting and the developer, said the property was perfect for a small apartment building.
“You can walk over and do your laundry, you can walk over with the kids and play or you can walk down to the waterfront and you can go the other way and there’s stores and shops and everything else.”
If approved as presented, 12 of the 38 units would meet affordable housing criteria.
No decision was made and a staff recommendation on the proposal will come to a future meeting of the planning committee.
