With a provincial election just weeks away, Hastings Prince Edward Public Health is asking candidates and voters to “Make Health Matter.”
Public Health has released a Provincial Election Primer with information relevant to health issues of concern in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties and the election.
Issues include adequate income and greater access to mental health services.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ethan Toumishey says better policies to deal with substance abuse, in particular opioids, are also badly needed.
“This has been a crisis that we faced as a community before the pandemic but has only gotten worse. So from, saying from Public Health, it’s a very important topic that we need to address. And this is affecting our community members’ health each and every day.”
He says there’s much that can be done.
“Greater access within services, treatments that may be available. Looking into how we respond to those who use substances and their interaction with health systems and justice systems.”
