Belleville Fire and Emergency Services are once again reminding us to make sure our smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working after one person was critically injured in a fire early Wednesday.
Fire crews were called to a multi-unit residential structure at 306 Front Street just after midnight where a fire had occurred within the confines of one of the units.
A lone occupant was transported to Belleville General Hospital in critical condition, and subsequently transported via Air Ornge to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.
Investigation revealed the cause of the fire to be careless smoking but officials also determined there were no working smoke alarms in the unit where the fire started.
The BFES Prevention Bureau will be following up in relation to the compliance requirements with the Ontario Fire Code.
Belleville Fire says working smoke and CO alarms are required by law in all homes.
