Belleville city council learned a lot about an important community support organization that most people know nothing of.
The coordinator of the Belleville Community Trust Fund Allison Ferrill appeared before council Monday.
The fund provides emergency funding to help people pay for a week’s groceries, or pay a hydro bill before the power gets cut off, or pay for temporary transportation.
The funding can be provided almost immediately but is for short-term crisis and is not offered long-term.
Since 1994 the Belleville Community Trust Fund has provided just over $2 million to 36,000 individuals.
Its $120,000 budget is mostly funded by the United Way and Hastings County, but donations are accepted and much needed as the demand for emergency assistance increases along with the cost of living.
