Planning for the World Rowing Tour which will kick off in the Quinte region this September is in high gear.
More than 50 long-distance rowers from around the world will travel from Brighton to Mallorytown from September 11 to 17.
Lead organizer Peter Jepson of Ontario Adventure Rowing says this will be the third time the annual event has been held in Canada, though the Tour hasn’t been held since 2019 due to the pandemic.
“We particularly suggested this area, the Bay of Quinte and the Thousand Islands as a great place for a rowing tour and the type of boats we are going to be using are known as coastal boats which are suitable for rowing in rough water.”
Jepson is inviting the public to come down to the water all along the route to cheer on Tour participants and learn about recreational rowing.
Opening ceremonies will be held at Zwick’s Park in Belleville on September 10 where there will also be a family friendly Quinte Water Sports Fair that will be open to all and promote several non-motorized water sports.
“The basic thing is, you know, as well as putting on a tour that everybody will have a lot of fun, and we’re trying to promote the sport of rowing and particularly as I say recreational or non-competitive rowing.”
