Hastings-Lennox and Addington Conservative MP Shelby Kramp-Neuman was on the Lorne Brooker Show this morning to discuss the federal budget.
She says she was disappointed in her first budget experience.
“I definitely see it as an irresponsible budget. I saw it as a tax and spend budget. And I think that what we saw is $60 billion of new spending, instead of getting more and kind of inspiring Canadians, and giving them hope, I feel like we’re spending more and with this budget we’re getting less.”
When asked about the $4 billion to deal with the housing market, Kramp-Neuman says she will wait and see if that comes to fruition.
“We need to wait for the supplementary estimates that are going to be tabled later on in the year, and that’s where we’re truly going to see how committed they are to these particular numbers because as we can recognize, and as I can certainly identify, the Liberals are really good at announcing, but not necessarily always as strong on delivering.”
She says they were looking for more substantial action on increasing the housing supply because putting the responsibility down onto municipalities, she doesn’t see how that will work.
She says this budget is about continuing to borrow and cited her time as a financial advisor, comparing it to a credit card bill.
“It’s getting higher and higher and higher, and we’re no further ahead now than we were six years ago,” she told Lorne.
Today begins three days of budget discussion, something that is seen as almost irrelevant because of the Liberal/NDP agreement.
Kramp-Neuman says budgets are supposed to bring healthy discussion, which won’t happen.
“I see this as a monumental failure because the cost of living crisis that is affecting so many Canadians is only, in my eyes, getting worse with the NDP/Liberal government.”
She says she feels the leadership of this government isn’t stepping up as we try to navigate a very pivotal point in our lives as there is so much happening in the world.
