Expect to see people marching along with picket signs outside of Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf in Belleville Thursday afternoon.
Parents of children at the school and some teachers are holding a demonstration against what they believe is the provincial government’s negligence toward not only Sir James Whitney but the other 10 schools for the deaf and blind, along with demonstration schools.
Stephanie Antone is the Chair of the Provincial Demonstration Schools Council and says buildings and classrooms are not being maintained and staffing needs are being ignored.
“Students with disabilities have a right to be accommodated and that’s happening minimally at best.
What we’re seeing is teachers aren’t being trained and certified as ASL and they’re having a hard time accessing interpreters.”
There are currently around 45 students enrolled at Sir James Whitney and Sagonaska Demonstration School.
The demonstration begins at 3:30.
