The City of Belleville’s Green Task Force would like to remind residents that Earth Hour takes place this Saturday, March 26 and encourages all to take part in the movement.
Earth Hour began as a way to visually demonstrate support for actions that address climate change and biodiversity loss around the world. It is a time to reflect on our habits and how we can better care for each other and the home that we all share.
Millions of people across the world turn off their lights and unplug at 8:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of March each and every year to bring awareness to the climate change crisis.
“Observing Earth Hour in our homes and with our families isn’t a big commitment, but it’s an opportunity to remind us that we’re all in this together to help preserve and protect our Earth, our climate and our future by simply turning off essential lights and electronics for an hour,” said Councillor Chris Malette, Chair of the City’s Green Task Force.
There are many meaningful ways that we can participate in the unplugged hour including spending quality time with family and friends, connecting with nature, learning more about current environmental issues and climate change, participating in an online webinar (unplugged of course) and more.
In addition to taking part in Earth Hour, there are many things we can do on a daily basis to help lessen our impact on the environment. Actions such as wasting less food, travelling responsibly, eliminating or reducing plastic use, saving water, being energy-efficient, protecting natural spaces and being a conscious consumer, all contribute to a more eco-conscious and sustainable world.
