The Wellington Dukes defeated the Chargers 7-3 in Mississauga Saturday.
Jacob Vreugdenhill led the Dukes with five points including two goals.
Emmet Pierce netted a hat trick – he’s got 38 goals this season – while Barrett Joynt scored twice.
Pierce opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game but the Dukes were trailing 2-1 after the first period.
It was 3-3 after two, with Joynt scoring shorthanded 4:29 in and Pierce picking up his second goal of the game at the 12:03 mark.
It was all Wellington in the third period as Vreugdenhill scored twice in just over three minutes (3:02, 6:34), Pierce picking up the hat trick with his 38th of the season (10:21) and Joynt his second just over a minute later (11:31).
The Dukes outshot the Chargers 58-28.
Wellington’s next game is Friday versus the Toronto Jr. Canadians, 7:30 at Lehigh Arena.
With the win, the Dukes pulled five points ahead of Trenton to remain in top spot in the OJHL’s East Division.
The Trenton Golden Hawks fell 2-1 in Minden to the Haliburton County Huskies, their second loss in as many nights.
The game was scoreless after the first period.
The Huskies scored both goals in the second period.
Aiden MacIntosh netted Trenton’s only goal 6:16 into the third, assisted by Dalton Bancroft and Devin Mauro, to make it close.
The Huskies now sit just one point back of second-place Trenton in the East.
The Golden Hawks are back in action tonight, hosting Mississauga, 7:30 at the Duncan McDonald Arena.
