March is fraud prevention month and the Prince Edward County OPP remind members of the public about the program “Project Safe Trade.”
The purpose of Project Safe Trade is to create a community safe zone at an OPP detachment parking lot in which to facilitate online property transactions. Creating a community safe zone is about moving online transactions away from secluded parking lots, personal residences or other areas and bringing them to a public place.
They are inviting members of the public to use the OPP safe trade-designated parking space at its detachment, located at 569 County Road 1 in Picton. The safe trade parking space is available at all times with no appointment necessary and is also available at the Bancroft, Central Hastings, and Quinte West detachments.
The OPP will not mediate transactions, provide documentation or be a witness to a transaction, however if an officer is requested, one will respond and only intervene if the transaction becomes a criminal matter.
