A Belleville police officer will not face any charges after a man was seriously injured in a cell last fall.
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has found no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence.
On November 19, the officer noticed a 26-year-old man on the floor of his cell and rushed to cut loose the ligature.
The officer rendered first aid to the man until paramedics arrived.
Director Martino found nothing to dispute the officer’s evidence that he checked on the man routinely via cell monitors nor was there any reason to be concerned that the man was at risk of self-harm.
The director is satisfied that there is no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in the case.
