All things considered it was a solid year for construction in 2021 for the City of Belleville.
A total of 838 building permits were issued for a construction value of almost $127 million.
That was up from close to $102 million in 2020.
A total of 373 dwelling units were constructed, including 198 houses.
Of note is the number of permits issued for second dwelling units (granny suites).
Last year 51 of those units were approved, more than double the number approved the year before.
The city had changed several housing policies and added incentives to encourage the construction of more affordable units
within existing homes in this council’s term.
And the popularity of summertime fun in the form of swimming pools remains on the increase.
In 2021, 76 permits allowing swimming pools were issued, up from 60 in 2020 and more than double the 32 issued five years ago in 2016.
