A much enjoyed spring time event is not being held this year in Prince Edward County.
The Maple in the County Planning Committee made the decision last week to cancel this year’s festivities because according to Ron Hubbs, chairperson for the committee, the maple producers felt because of COVID-19 and the restrictions, they could not hold this event to the standard for which it is known.
“We wanted people to come and enjoy the experience, and we just felt like they couldn’t do that this year with the restrictions we’d have to put in place.”
The event would have been held on the weekend of March 26 and 27, 2022.
Hubbs said based on the current and evolving COVID situation, frontline healthcare personnel have been doing an amazing job for the community and the planning committee did not feel it would be proper to possibly tax them further unnecessarily at this time.
“I don’t think the majority of the people in Prince Edward County are ready for us to bring in 12,000-15,000 people from outside the County. I mean everybody’s anxious and they want to get going, but I don’t think the people in the County would look at that as being a really favourable thing to do right now.”
The members of Maple in the County Maple Syrup Producers are gearing up to gather sap, make maple syrup and will be open throughout the spring for sales of maple products (Sweetwater Cabin/Hubbs, Fosterholm Farms, Vaders Maple, Roblin’s Maple, LOHA Farms, Nyman Farms, Justin’s Maple Syrup, and Sugarbush Vineyards).
Hubbs says there was a greater demand for maple syrup last year and most producers are down to their last jugs of syrup and are ready to get this year’s season under way.
The planning committee is hoping to see this event return in full force in 2023.
