The Wellington Dukes and Trenton Golden Hawks shook off any rust on Friday night that may have collected after more than a month off since their last games.
The Wellington Dukes were on the road taking on the St. Michael’s Buzzers and came away with a 3-2 double overtime victory.
Jacob Vreugdenhill opened the scoring less than a minute into the game for the Dukes and they carried that lead through most of the first period until Brad Somers capitalized on the man advantage with a second left in the period to tie the game up at a goal apiece after 20 minutes of play.
Graham Dickerson gave the visitors back the lead in the middle frame at the 2:23 mark.
The Dukes’ lead held into the third period until Jack Sparkes used the power play advantage to beat Matt Dunsmoor in net for a 2-2 game.
The first overtime period didn’t see a winner emerge, but Vreugdenhill came up big in the second overtime period and scored the game winner, beating Jacob Gorinsky at 2:57 for the 3-2 win.
The Dukes are on the road this afternoon to take on Haliburton at 4:30 p.m.

The lead didn’t last long as Cobourg responded 30 seconds later when Adam Barone was able to get the puck behind Nguyen William.
The middle frame was a penalty-filled affair for both teams, but saw five goals scored in the 20 minute span.
Trenton took back the lead less than three minutes into the period when Jake Campbell found the back of the twine. Matthew Cato extended the Golden Hawks’ lead to three two minutes later when he beat Justin Easter in the crease.
Cobourg responded with a power play goal by Andy Reist and then a short handed marker a few minutes later from George Krotiris tied the game back up a 3-3.
Not to be outdone on their home ice, Justin Mauro added another goal for the Golden Hawks before the end of the period to take the 4-3 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Cobourg tried to spoil the party with a goal early in the period from Charlie Da Fonseca to tie the game back up again but Cato scored his second goal of the game at the 14:04 mark for the game winner.
