Hastings Prince Edward has a new Medical Officer of Health.
At its meeting Tuesday, the Board of Health approved Dr. Ethan Toumishey as the successful candidate.
Toumishey has been the acting Medical Officer of Health since October when Dr. Peter Oglaza moved to Kingston.
Board Chair Jo-Anne Albert pointed out that Toumishey had been working as acting MOH since October, “Ethan’s knowledge, expertise and leadership helped us make our decision … he is by far the best candidate for our area. He has the skills and training for this role and passion for public health.”
In a statement released after the meeting, Albert said, “He has demonstrated strong and steady leadership in the face of the pandemic and during the selection process it quickly became evident that he not only has the skills and training necessary for this challenging role, but also has the vision and passion to advocate for public health and the important role it plays in keeping our residents safe and healthy.”
Before taking on the Acting MOH role, Dr. Toumishey was hired as the Director of Clinical Programs at HPEPH after completing his residency in Public Health and Preventive Medicine in June 2021.
Dr. Toumishey has a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Ottawa, graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine from Dalhousie University, and completed a Masters in Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Queen’s University and met the requirements for fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in June 2021. He has worked as an independent family physician and is also a guest lecturer at Queen’s University.
