It may still be January but the City of Quinte West is already preparing for spring and the return of LDD moths.
The city will be spraying severely affected municipally-owned properties with a natural Btk pesticide and Director of Public Works and Environmental Services Chris Angelo says they’re asking all rural property owners to be on the lookout for LDD moths, formerly known as gypsy moths and caterpillars.
People can share information through the city’s website and learn about actions they can take to save trees.
A press release from Quinte West says in 2021 the LDD moth defoliated 18,000 square kilometres of Ontario forest with some of the heaviest moth concentrations found in eastern Ontario.
Nearly four out of five rural properties are at risk.
