With the snowfall tapering off Monday afternoon, residents are digging out from one of the biggest storms in years.
Snow began in the Quinte region around 10 p.m. on Sunday and continued well into the afternoon Monday.
Readings taken at CFB Trenton show 33.4 cm of snow fell from Sunday night through to around 2:30 Monday afternoon, though some areas may have received more than that as Environment Canada predicted the storm could dump as much as 50 cm or more.
Police asked people to stay off the roads as the blizzard caused whiteout conditions.
There were several reports of cars sliding off the the road.
There were numerous closures along Highway 401 including the westbound lanes at County Road 33 Trenton which were closed for a couple of hours while two transports were cleared from the scene.
Several other major roadways across southern Ontario experienced closures, including Highway 7 between Kaladar and Perth.
In addition to buses being cancelled and most of the region’s schools being closed, there were several other closures and cancellations including COVID-19 vaccination clinics and testing centres.
Belleville and Quinte West transit services shut down for the day.
Even the Quinte Mall was closed.
The storm is now moving into eastern Quebec.
