Despite a second place finish in the Pairs competition at the 2022 National Skating championships in Ottawa, Brighton’s Trennt Michaud and his partner Evelyn Walsh were not selected to the Canadian Olympic team for the Beijing Winter Games.
Instead they will be going to Estonia to compete in the International Skating Union “Four Continents Championship January 18th to the 23rd.
Canada named Kirsten Moore Towers and Michael Marinaro along with Vanessa James and Eric Radford to compete in Pairs in Beijing.
While Towers and Marinaro finished first, ahead of Michaud and Walsh at the Nationals, James and Radford were 7th in Pairs after withdrawing from the championship in Ottawa following the short program. The two had contracted COVID just before Christmas.
According to a story in the Toronto Star the decision to award the Olympic berth to James and Radford drew the ire of some skating fans.
The Canadian Championships are only part of Skate Canada’s Olympic qualifying criteria. Scores and results from international events are also taken into consideration.
