Now that the City of Belleville has approved a plan to increase development charges, the Quinte Home Builders Association says it will expect accountability.
As of June 2022, development charges levied on a new house in urban Belleville will jump from almost $16,000 to a little over $24,000.
QHBA President Jon Van Huizen says builders have always been willing to collect development charges on behalf of new purchasers but the Association wants to ensure council and the public understand the full impact of the new rates.
He says with the city development charge reserve funds currently sitting at nearly $16 million, they expect the city to spend the funds on what they were intended for.
By keeping the money in reserves, Van Huizen says residents actually get less for their dollar.
The QHBA will meet in the coming weeks to determine its next steps.
