Hastings Prince Edward Public Health says residents should be concerned about the recent increase in cases of COVID-19 in the region especially as we head into the holiday season.
In the last week, the number of active cases of COVID-19 has increased by 280% from 30 active cases on November 18 to 114 on November 25.
Public health officials say the largest percentage of local COVID-19 cases is among individuals aged 18 to 40 with this age group accounting for more than one in three cases since September.
The 18 to 40 age group also has the lowest rate of COVID-19 vaccination.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ethan Toumishey says there is a disturbing trend emerging with people ignoring mild symptoms and continuing with their daily lives.
He is urging everyone to protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated if they haven’t already.
All residents are advised to limit their close contacts by keeping any social gatherings small, and keeping contacts consistent.
Dr. Toumishey reminds parents of school-aged children to screen every day and keep them home if they show any symptom of illness, even if vaccinated.
