Quinte Health Care has been recognized for a three-year-long project leading to fewer unnecessary red cell blood transfusions at its hospitals.
QHC has been designated as a “Using Blood Wisely Hospital” by Choosing Wisely Canada and Canadian Blood Services.
Chief of Staff Dr. Colin MacPherson said the process to bring the number of transfusions down was a complicated one and involved work in various departments, adding that its success has inspired other quality improvement projects.
“This was a model for some other projects around reducing catherization for example and optimizing the use of antibiotics in our emergency department.”
The blood transfusion project was overseen by QHC Vice President Jeff Hohenkerk.
