Prince Edward County council will consider adding firefighters to its policy regarding mandatory COVID-19 vaccination.
A staff report to be reviewed at Tuesday’s meeting recommends that firefighters be added to the list as “any firefighter could be put in a position to provide medical services to someone in a first response situation, regardless of whether they are on a medical first responder call.”
According to the staff report there are currently 132 volunteer firefighters assigned to one of the 10 fire stations in the county and, though the information hasn’t been formally collected, it is believed that 115 of them are fully vaccinated.
The staff report also includes a recommendation that unvaccinated firefighters be put on a temporary leave of absence from attending first response calls until they are fully vaccinated.
Council meets Tuesday at 7 p.m.
