So far this year the Belleville Police Service unit that carries out Project Renewal has been a serious success.
Following Thursday’s Belleville Police Services Board meeting Police Chief Mike Callaghan sang the praises of the group and the work they’ve done to keep drugs off the streets of Belleville.
“I can tell you that that team, in speaking with the OPP commanders, is the envy of the province and it’s something that we need to be proud of for this region because we’re making significant inroads into our drug trafficking, gun trafficking, human trafficking and, obviously, saving lives of individuals who may have a propensity to use illicit drugs on the street.”
At the meeting the third quarter numbers for project renewal were released.
The members reported that, in the third quarter there were nine investigations conducted which resulted in 23 people arrested and 15 charges laid.
Eight were for possession of a controlled substance, four were for possession for the purpose of trafficking and three were possession of proceeds of crime.
Renewal members also reported the seizure of $15,455 in drugs including $6,950 from 69.5 grams of cocaine and $8,505 from 567 morphine pills.
They also reported $16,340 in cash seized as well as cellphones, paraphernalia, an air soft pistol and a BB gun.
