The mayor of Quinte West Jim Harrison is making an impassioned plea to residents in the area in the wake of news that close to 500 gravestones have been spray-painted at two Belleville cemeteries.
“Cemeteries are sacred, they are our relatives, our loved ones. We need the public to come forth and help the police. If you have any information contact OPP (or Belleville Police), Crime Stoppers, whatever you can do to help us solve this. This has to end!”
Belleville Police responded to Elmwood Cemetery near Corbyville early Thursday morning.
Two hundred and fifty-five headstones had been painted.
Tuesday about 200 gravestones were defaced at St. James Roman Catholic Cemetery in Belleville’s west end.
Meanwhile late last month about 75 headstones were spray-painted at four different cemeteries in Quinte West.
