The Trenton Golden Hawks have come back to earth after beginning the season with a 9-0 record.
The Golden Hawks dropped a contest to the Lindsay Muskies 2-1 in overtime on the road Friday night coming off back-to-back losses at the OJHL Governor’s Showcase in Cobourg earlier in the week.
The Golden Hawks lost a 4-1 game to the Toronto Junior Canadiens on Tuesday then fell again on Wednesday 3-2 against the St. Michael’s Buzzers in double overtime.
On Friday, Trenton took on the Lindsay Muskies, who sit in second place behind Trenton in the East Divison standings.
The first period proved a defensive battle as neither team was able to crack the scoreboard until late in the first when Justin Mauro put Trenton on the board with his second goal of the season.
Trenton had one chance on the power play in the first to Lindsay’s two but neither team capitalized and the Golden Hawks took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The second period proved much of the same as both teams were blanked despite each having one shot on the man advantage.
Lindsay finally broke onto the scoreboard in the third period when Trenton forward Jake Campbell took a slashing penalty that sent the Muskies to the power play.
Lindsay forward Boyd Stahlbaum scored on the man advantage to knot the game at one with just seven-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Despite one more power play opportunity for the Golden Hawks, the Muskies fought it off and the game remained tied at the end of regulation.
In overtime Stahlbaum played the hero for Lindsay and handed Trenton their third straight loss when he ended the game four minutes into the extra frame with his second goal of the game.
Trenton goalie Will Nguyen made 39 saves on the night and Trenton fired off 30 of their own but were unable to solve Muskies goalie and Belleville native Ethan Fraser outside of the lone goal in the first period.
Trenton’s attention now turns to the second of eight matchups with the Wellington Dukes as part of the in-season derby style Hasty Ps Cup, happening on Halloween.
The Dukes and Golden Hawks renew pleasantries on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Lehigh Arena in Wellington.
