Prince Edward County Council will be asked to approve a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for municipal employees this week.
Senior staff are recommending the policy after reviewing public health advice, human rights and workplace policies, and discussing the plan with The County’s Emergency Control Group.
A report from Chief Administrative Officer Marcia Wallace says the policy is being put forward “to protect staff and the public that may interact with staff” and following similar announcements by other municipalities, along with a rise in local COVID-19 case counts.
If approved, the policy would cover all full-time and part-time workers, with those staff having to be fully vaccinated by November 15.
The policy would not apply to volunteer firefighters or councillors since they’re not employed by the municipality, though they would still have to provide proof of vaccination to use municipal facilities, in line with provincial rules.
It also won’t apply to any employees with a valid medical exemption.
County Council will vote on the policy at its meeting on Tuesday night.
