There has been a dramatic jump in the number of COVID-19 cases in Hastings-Prince Edward along with another death.
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health reports 19 new infections bringing the total active cases to 33.
The virus has caused the deaths of 13 people in the HPE region since the beginning of the pandemic.
Monday’s update is the first since Friday.
Nine of the new infections were found in people located in Belleville, eight in Quinte West, and one each in Tyendinaga/Deseronto and north Hastings County.
Twelve of the nineteen new cases were in people who were not vaccinated.
Five of them are under the age of 18.
A dozen of the cases are attributed to close contact with another one being outbreak-related.
Two cases were caused by local spread with the causes of the other four pending.
On Saturday, the health unit warned of multiple cases springing from a ball game at Quinte West’s Bain Park last Wednesday.
Two people are in hospital, both on a ventilator in the ICU.
The health unit says 86% of local residents age 12 and up have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine while 77% are fully vaccinated.
In Northumberland, the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit reported five new cases on Monday.
Twelve cases are active.
