Belleville’s first ever Giveaway Day went smoothly.
This, according to Belleville Coun. Bill Sandison who sits on Belleville’s Green Task Force that conceived the idea.
“I drove around the area and I saw a fair number of people that were participating in the Giveaway Day. I drove around, actually, first thing this [Sunday] morning and I see that most people have been compliant with taking the goods in off of the street.”
On Saturday residents were invited to put out unwanted household items on the curb to be picked through by other community members to find a second life.
Sandison said he hopes that some people benefited and that he hopes that people will consider donating unclaimed goods to places like Habitat for Humanity or Value Village.
As for the future of the Giveaway Day, Sandison said he hopes there’s a chance to expand upon it.
“The Green Task Force meets again this coming week so we’ll have a discussion on the entire committee’s experience and see what they think in terms of moving it forward. I’m optimistic that we’ll perhaps expand it to once in the spring and once in the fall coincident with school season and when people generally move so, yeah. Brighter days ahead I think.”
