Monday is not only federal election day but it’s also the start of Rail Safety Week in Canada.
Earlier this week representatives from CN Rail spoke about rail safety at a meeting of Quinte West council.
CN’s Daniel Salvator said social media can be helpful in the promotion of safe railways but also harmful because it encourages people to take pictures of themselves while they are on railroad tracks and often with a train coming.
“It comes up all the time and it’s simply dumb. It’s not safe. You know, trains travel fast and are quieter than you think.”
Salvator reminds people to obey signs and signals at all railway crossings and to remember that “train time is anytime.”
Rail Safety Week runs until September 6.
