An environmental assessment of a bridge near Warkworth in Northumberland County has been completed.
Project manager Matt MacDonald of Jewell Engineering tells Quinte News a number of options were considered for the 100-year-old Thompson bridge on Skinkle Road.
“You know, whether to close the bridge. Whether to replace it with a new bridge. Whether to replace it with a single lane or two lane.”
MacDonald added, “The existing structure is a single lane structure. So all the evaluation, all the options were considered.”
“The option on the table that the county’s putting forward at this point was to leave the bridge closed, you know, given the cost of the bridge is quite significant.”
He also says, “So that’s what’s being presented at this point and they’re looking for comments from the public for feedback. Then the county will decide on a final plan for the structure. Currently it’s closed because of its condition. It’s not safe to remain open any further at this point so they had to close it due to its condition. Because of that, it’s a matter of confirming the path forwards upon receipt of final comments during this process.”
