Prince Edward County council is giving the Picton Town Hall Board of Management a small break due to the pandemic.
In light of COVID-19 shutting down many community areas, the board struggled to generate revenue in the last year to pay the municipality the $19,000 owed, due in June of next year.
During the pandemic the town hall hosted some essential services such as the Food Collective’s Food Depot which facilitated 59 weeks of food distribution.
Due to the restrictions on rental opportunities with the various lockdowns it was ultimately decide to shelf rentals until restrictions were lifted.
The staff report presented to council stated that the board of management’s bank balance sat at $9,463.33 which offered little flexibility to pay back the municipality.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, councillors approved a motion that would extend the repayment term by one year if the board can secure a long term anchor tenant for the main floor of Picton Town Hall by year end.
According to the staff report, there are already two non-profit organizations interested in leasing the space and the successful candidate is expected to be secured by December 31 of this year.
