The City of Belleville’s first ever giveaway day event is happening this Saturday.
On September 18, residents of Belleville are invited to put gently used items like furniture, small appliances, books, kitchen items and more out on the curb.
The idea for the event is for people to put unwanted goods out for other residents to have.
Councillor Bill Sandison explained how the event will work.
“Eight o’clock in the morning the goods should be out. They need to be identified with some sort of sign or sticker that indicates it’s free material. At the end of the day, say eight o’clock in the evening, any material that hasn’t been picked up needs to come back into the garage or the house, wherever it’s normally stored.”
Items such as playpens, strollers or anything that may have had any kind of manufacturer recall should not be put out.
The idea came through the green task force and was adopted from neighbouring municipalities, according to Sandison.
He also said that people should consider donating anything that doesn’t get taken to Habitat for Humanity or Value Village.
If this year is successful, Sandison said, they will consider doing it annually or even twice a year moving forward.
