Two people were airlifted to hospital following a natural gas explosion at the Lehigh Cement Plant near Picton this morning.
Prince Edward County Deputy Fire Chief Tim Kraemer says emergency crews responded to the explosion around 8:45 a.m.
“Our Priority there was to ensure that the occupants of the worksite and the public were protected from the dangers of a natural gas explosion. And we assisted in isolating the natural gas leak and ensuring that the scene was protected.”
Three people were taken Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital.
Two were then airlifted to Toronto and the third person was released.
Deputy Chief Kraemer says the fire did not spread.
“From what I witnessed, it was limited to a small area and the effects were to the people working on the site and equipment in the area.”
The Ministry of Labour and the Office of the Fire Marshal are investigating.
