Some students returned to class last week but the bulk of local elementary and secondary school students are returning Tuesday morning and with that, the morning commute will get much busier.
Constable Paul Fyke with the Belleville Police Service Traffic Safety Unit suggests motorists give themselves some extra time to get where they’re going and to drive with caution.
“We just want everyone to be very aware of their surroundings. You have kids that are starting school that have never done this before as well so they might make mistakes. And we’re hoping with drivers and pedestrians all taking the extra time to have some caution, that everyone gets there safe.”
Constable Fyke says, along with extra school buses on the roads, crossing guards will be back.
“Crossing guards do a tremendous job in getting all of our children safe to and from school. They have a very important job. They’re not just gonna jump out in front of traffic to say, ‘Oh, stop. You gotta stop.’ They’re very well trained in what it is that they need to do. If you disobey a crossing guard, you’re gonna be looking at a $730 fine and four demerit points against your driver’s licence.”
Expect to see extra police patrolling local roadways this week.
